The Multiple Uses Of Hand-Cycles

By Clare Westwood

Hand-cycles use arm strength instead of leg strength. This is what separates them from regular bicycles. These handbikes have three wheels, the rider usually sits between the back two wheels. They can be purchased with a recumbent, trunk powered, or kneeling seated position.

Individuals who have lost the use of their legs can use handbikes for exercise, rehabilitation, and even for competition racing. Some styles are made specifically for off road riding, and sometimes this style puts the two wheels in the front and one in the rear. People of every fitness level can enjoy biking. One style used for the serious biker, uses the body leaning steering system for enhanced maneuverability. These bikes are now being seen on the roads more and more.

As with any exercise, talk to a physician first to determine how far to go based on disability and stamina. Always start with short distances to increase endurance. Take a cell phone in case of emergencies; such as a cycle malfunction or an accident.

Every workout will improve the muscle tone in both the arms and abdomen. Overall health will also improve. Results could include easier breathing, strengthened immune system, and maintaining a healthier weight.

Handbikes can fit easily into most cars. Manufacturers have made these bikes light and transportable which opens up a wider choice of tracks, routes, and competitions. Manufacturers take into consideration weight distribution and centrifugal force when making these bikes. This offers the best cycling performance.

Whether trying to improve upper body strength, or using hand-cycles due to an injury to the lower body - this is an excellent upper body workout. These bikes are an awesome alternative to a typical bicycle. Handbikes can be ridden on mountain trails, bike paths, or competition tracks.
